I’ve returned from the REC Western Deanery Clericus held February 3–5 in Carefree, Arizona. Clericus continues to be a valuable and necessary rhythm for our deanery: time set aside for common prayer, the Holy Eucharist, theological study, and fellowship among clergy who share the same vows and responsibilities.
Our days were structured around the Church’s worship—Daily Office, Eucharists—mostly held at Christ Anglican Church, with lodging and meals at Spirit in the Desert retreat center. The pace was intentional: unhurried, ordered, and focused.
We are thankful for Canon Steve Dart, Rector of Christ Church and canon of the Anglican Province of Christ the King, whose hospitality made this Clericus possible.
The teaching this year centered on the Christian ministry, drawing from Anglicanism by Paul Elmer More and Frank Leslie Cross. Sessions addressed principles of episcopacy, priesthood and apostolic succession, Holy Orders as a sacrament, and the nature of Anglican orders, with Bishop Charlie Camlin providing both instruction and episcopal counsel. The final session allowed time for open questions and discussion about the diocese and ACNA at large.

I was grateful for the opportunity to serve as celebrant at one of the weekday Eucharists.
There was also unstructured time for conversation and rest—shared meals, long discussions, and informal fellowship with a cigar. I’m thankful for the leadership of the deanery with Dr. Steve Rutt and for Bishop Camlin’s presence, and for the fraternity of brothers committed to advancing Christ’s Kingdom in the Anglican way. I return to parish life encouraged and refocused.
